This is a meeting to bring your questions, concerns, and observations about your colonies: feeding, varroa mite treatment, fall beekeeping and transitioning for winter. Any topics or questions are welcome!
There will be beekeepers from your area clusters, area coordinators, and MDBA board members to help answer your questions.

Join other Central Cluster members for an online conversation about what we‘re doing and seeing in our colonies this month.
Pizza, salad and dessert! Members and immediate Family member guests are welcome. Registration is required for Pizza ordering - Payment is through the website when you register. MDBA members $7, Member guest (spouse/partner) $4. Member guest (child) $2 for each child. Join us for a fun evening, the 2025 Board will be introduced and Beekeeper and Volunteer of the year will be announced. We will be serving pizza, salad and dessert while we enjoy a Bee Chat led by experienced MDBA members. 6 PM pizza dinner, the General Meeting program starts at 7PM and ends at 9PM. Come early and help set up for the program, pizza dinner and raffle. Doors open at 5:00 PM for set up. Dinner will start at 6PM.

Hosted by experienced MDBA beekeepers, Ian Thomas-Bignami and Don Gerken, this is your opportunity to learn “in person”:
TOPIC: WINTER MANAGEMENT
Describe concerns / seek advice re: your colonies heading into winter.
Discuss important steps that need to be taken to prepare your colonies for winter.
Discuss important do‘s and don‘ts during the winter months.
Special focus will be on new (years 1 - 4) beekeepers getting started. The Beehive Deep Dive & Learn session will explore what‘s happening in MDBA’s community hives to help you manage your colonies as we transition into winter, ensuring your bees are ready for a strong start in 2025! Remember: there is no stupid question when it comes to beekeeping! It‘s a continual learning process.
Beginner Beekeeping Class One
For new MDBA members who joined July, Aug, Sept, Oct, 2024 and have no hives or have a hive. This class is also useful to new beekeepers ( 1 - 3 years) who have bees and need more basic information.
This class will discuss, show, and have hands-on demonstration of PPE’s (personal protection equipment) hive components, hive tools, varroa test equipment, hive equipment, where to place your beehives and apiary considerations, plus resources.
MDBA Beekeepers will be your teachers. The class will be held at board member -Jaci Kildare‘s home and apiary.
Just a quick reminder to mark your calendars for the fourth presentation this year, in our new Zoom education series, on Thursday evening, October 24th, at 7:00PM to hear Dr. Priya Chakrabarti Basu - “Healthy Bees, Healthy Hive: The Power of Proper Nutrition”.
Dr. Priya Chakrabarti Basu is currently an Assistant Professor at the Department of Agricultural Science and Plant Protection, Mississippi State University. Priya is also a courtesy faculty at the Department of Horticulture, Oregon State University. Priya studies the interactive impacts of multiple stressors on bees, for example poor nutrition, pesticides, climate change and diseases. She uses a wide array of multidisciplinary techniques across fields such as physiology, toxicology, functional biology, multiomics-based approaches and neuroethology to address her research questions. She is currently serving as the Secretary/Treasurer of the American Association of Professional Apiculturists, Vice-President of Mississippi Entomological Association, the Vice-President Elect of the PBT Section of the Entomological Society of America and the North American Chair of the nutrition taskforce for COLOSS, the international bee organization. She was also the past Chair of the Early Careers Professionals Committee of the Entomological Society of America. In addition to the research community, Priya enjoys teaching and working with stakeholders, policymakers and the general community in protecting bee pollinators and raising pollinator awareness.
